Hello faithful internet chums! I'm afraid my last post rather ran away with itself through directions I don't really want to contemplate.
Anyway, I'm sure that you're all breathlessly eager to know just how my second day of the new college year went.
Well, I had my first uneventful biology lesson (no doubt the first of many) and my first drama lesson, which was considerably more exciting, if only for the tension. You see, in drama this year, we have been placed into groups so that we might all produce our own piece of original theatre. I have been placed in an all boy group, seeing as we have had above average numbers of boys appearing in this class this year. We were given a stimulus (which can be anything from a name to a newspaper article to a song) from which to extrapolate all the themes we were to put into the piece. Our stimulus was the names of two asylums.
The problem was that within the first lesson when asked to do research, we had the written the entire plot, something we weren't meant to do for another few months. The issue was that we had done no research, no background reading and had no idea of the themes. We had merely written a plot which was basically Shutter Island crossed with Inception only with more twists - I kid you not, there was about 20.
It was about a man with multiple personality disorders in an asylum who felt compled to solve a recent string of inmate murders. As the play goes on, he would be left cryptic clues from his other personalities (as they are "killed" by electroshock treatment) as to what was happening until it's finally revealed that he is a detective with artificially induced schizophrenia as a result of one of the doctors who wants to test experimental and dangerous drugs on the patients and wanted the detective out of the way.
Or is it? Or is the lead character a dangerous psychopath creating justification for his actions? Or is it that his multiple personalities are real people? Or is it all in his head?!
Now as anyone with a basic understanding of the difference between cinema and theatre can tell you, or indeed anyone who knows the difference between a film canister and a stage, what works in a film does not necessarily work in a play. This was what our drama teacher carefully explained to us in no uncertain terms.
Thus was the cause said tension within our lesson, compounded by the fact that none of us had really done any research up till that point.
That was about it for the day really, if you don't count the talks we had in the morning relating to applying for University and how it is as apparently about as difficult to get in now as I have of becoming Pope. Which is lucky really, since Pope is my second career choice.
Anyway, that's all that I have to write for today. Sorry if not all of these are as interesting as you would have hoped, it's just that I'd forgotten just how much college takes it out of you.
Anyway, good day to you all.
